Let it go man. He was a great mayor and is a smart guy who agreed to moderate this event. If you feel you could do a better job, you should’ve reached out to the various committees and thrown your hat in the ring. There are a lot of recent Belmar folks who do not know who he is. Nor do they know, as I suspect you don’t know, what shape this town was in at the time.
Lastly, if you want to criticize a former mayor for thinking they had some kind of king complex, you should look no further than Doherty. He literally resigned from being mayor and recently held his own private “town hall” to pretend that only HE can save the town from itself. Comically narcissistic.
First of all, thank you for posting. Secondly, here are my takeaways about the debate questions and answers.
1) For council, the questions were more “broad” and mostly about the person’s background and what they could bring to the table. Johanna spoke much more about all the experience she has belonging to and running many committees and boards in town, managing budgets, etc. Disregarding Suzanne’s nervousness, she didn’t seem to present much except that she designed things for the town and, in her words, has creative ideas. Didn’t love that she wouldn’t stop reading at the end when asked.
2) For Mayor, the questions were much more specific (though quite wordy! Couldn’t they edit down the questions?). Both did a good job, but I felt that Caitlin answered most in that she already has been starting to put into place many of the things suggested by her opponent to change things for the positive (parking committee, grants, traffic studies, etc).
3) Following the rules, it seemed that some people disregarded the request not to applaud at the end of questions and some even yelled out. Can’t people follow simple rules of conduct?
Mrs Anan is not very good at following direction or expressing herself clearly. She’s very good at reading campaign talking points from a piece of paper in front of her, but not much else. I get that it is nerve wracking public speaking like that, but you can tell a lot about a person watching how they act under pressure.
Was a great event to showcase these folks and I’m glad they all agreed.
In her defense, she was the most genuine one up there. After having the lies of the last few years, it was refreshing to see someone so real. Maybe that was the point. She showed up the other side’s phoniness.
You know she is unstoppable, and she will fight for the people of Belmar.
You bring up the traffic study, if you were listening, it was Suzanne Anan who was on the phone for three hours with NJDOT after that family came to the town meeting. DeBlasio stated it was Suzanne who got the traffic study going. She isn’t even on council. Donovan didn’t disagree
My vote is with De Blasio and Anan for the Genuineness and passion
For Mayor we have the D: polished politician with stage presence who appears to “know the ropes” and has already gotten some important things addressed, like the Verizon matter. R: the nuts and bolts engineer with passion, vision and practical intent who is willing to get in there and “do serious business”. Each appears to have a plan for Belmar, aside from any personal ambition.
For Council we have the D: a grounded person who is methodical and has real-world business experience. R: the artist who colors outside the lines and has stick-to-it-iveness and an abundance of heart. Both candidates successful in their fields and seem to sense the illusive pulse of Belmar. Play Downtown by Petula Clark here.
Proof, intentions, personality? Politics suck but someone has to get in there and do something. Sort out the generalities and specifics.
Thank you for posting this for folks who couldn’t make it.
If course King Kenny made the first 11 minutes about him. Get on with the questions!!
