  1. What comes out of this (Deleted by Editor.) councilwoman Donovan is that she/they will never do the obvious thing (euthanize them) that has to be done to finish off those filthy geese.

      1. 8th Avenue sidewalk from the playground west .. full of geese poop.. Yesterday there were at least 20 geese eating near the sidewalk.. People stop feeding the geese and dropping your food on the sidewalk. I spoke with two young women about the geese problem.. don’t feed them.. Ten minutes later they are feeding them. Duh!

      2. What’s stopping you? Go out and do something about it. Or continue to whine from your La Z Boy.

          1. Settle down there, I was talking to Joe D. He is a professional whiner. I mean truly breathtaking is his ability to complain about, well everything.

But, since you brought it up, I guess you could make an argument that asking people to stop feeding the geese is doing something. But the geese eat the grass mostly, so I don’t think that dropping food is the problem. And before you say “what have you done to help?!” My answer is that I don’t care about the geese. They don’t bother me. I tend to worry about other things.

  2. This will continue to be a problem with no end in sight until they decide to call cull the flock. Time to give people priority over geese.

  3. They will put in more plants and grass, which will shed more organics into the water to decompose. The issue will continue to get even worse.

When too much plant material enters the water there may not be enough bacteria to break it down fast enough. You will see ammonia spikes and nitrate levels taking off. This is why you have Algae blooms.

    Add in some geese poop.

    1. Let’s not forget the role of lawn fertilizers that pour into the lake every time it rains.
While we’re figuring out how to ban geese, let’s figure out how to ban lawn fertilizer. It’s is worse for the lake than 1000 geese. Some won’t want to give them up but a dead lake is a pretty steep price to pay for a green lawn.

      1. Agreed. And while we’re at it ban the leaf blowers that the highly trained exploradores use to blow contaminants into the streets, onto neighbors properties and into YOUR lungs as you drive down the street.

      2. C’mon! Stop with the green lawns versus the geese like we’re talking windfarms versus oil rigs. Everyone take a big toke on a fatty or chew a ‘shroom if you have to, and escape the bifurcation box with some pioneering creative solutions.
Familiarize yourself with Xeriscape and see what places like Boulder, Colorado have done with it. All the flaming false liberty patriots will say, “We can’t legislate how people landscape their private properties even though it affects the lake and the biomass”. There are endless building codes for home architecture limits but landscape architecture has very few in comparison, but can- and should- be legislated tighter in a coastal/river/lake community.

The Belmar Environmental Commission would also do a huge service to the town and our waterways by pushing the administration to enact a ban on any and all weed killers with Glyphosate. Three parts per billion of the stuff causes liver distress in lab rats and it’s already depleted the American soil microbiome by an estimated 40%. The European Union was just about to ban it and instead a decade long extension was enacted for its use before the ban takes effect. We wouldn’t want to hurt the Global Corporatocracy now would we?!? Do something historic and outside the box before we become a treeless suburb of New York City, with the only things that are transplanted after construction are the inane new residents that want a miniature version of the urban land they miss so much which here at The Jersey Shore is simply known as suburban sprawl.

        1. Who’s in a ‘bifurcation box’? I like that btw. Bifurcation box. Great band name. Or for a duo.
We are talking about dealing with BOTH problems. Not one or the other. We’re in a binary box if anything. But I agree that the town leaders need to ban weed killer and fertilizer. But, as you read the comments on this blog, people freak out if you legislate away their precious lawn chemicals. They’ll cry and moan endlessly about organic goose poop and its effect on public bodies of water. But remain deafeningly silent about their own role in the destruction of those same bodies of water. We live in a society of ignorant selfishness disguised as patriotic freedom. Where you’re a communist if you dare speak up about ways to save the sea to shining sea.

  4. And remember folks, the landscaper’s gasoline fueled motors carried on the exploradoros backs are not only spewing lawn spoils, weeds, vermin and debris into oncoming cars, down your streets and into you sewers (Ocean) and adjacent properties this fouling everyone’s health in particular those poor guys who have diminished and eventual hearing loss and totally compromised lung capacity. Do you think their employer will pay for their workers compensation, medical bills or pay for Ear protection, poison ivy, or long term tick borne illnesses? Guess who…. Y O U. Where’s the elected legislators? I have a bridge that’s for sale, cheap in NY.

    1. Bingo. We wind up paying.
The large landscape contractors are happy to employ illegal immigrants. But they won’t take responsibility.

      1. Responsibility for what, exactly? Are you talking about the environment or immigration?

Maybe you should cut back on the grass.

        1. Haven’t touched grass since 1984. The environment and the crisis at the border are inextricably linked. If you don’t know that, you may want to bow out of the conversation.

    2. The powerful elected officials here in NJ are all Dems. and could care less about what YOU pay, except to increase the amount through taxes so they have more money to WASTE on their friends and families. Exploradors with long term illnesses???? They don’t care. They don’t pay for medical. The Dems give it to them for free. Free for them, not so free for YOU the legal taypayer.

  5. the best thing we can do to improve Silver Lake water quality is remove pollutants at the source … like remediating the property at 12th & Main before the contaminant plume gets there.

  6. Dear Anon
There are just a couple flaws in your assertions.
The NJ general assembly is currently made up of 52 dems and 28 republicans. The NJ senate is made up of 25 dems and 15 republicans. And of our 12!representatives in DC, 8 are dems, 3 republicans, 1 vacancy. Then of course 2 senators. There are some powerful republicans in those minorities. There has also been more years with a Republican Governor in NJ over the last 30 years than democrat.
Undocumented immigrants do not have access to Medicaid. Medicaid is the federally and state funded health care insurance program for the poor. You seem to be laboring under the misconception that the gov pays for the health insurance of the illegals. They don’t. The undocumented folks have but a few choices: don’t go to the doctor, go to the local ER for everything and skip out if they can’t pay (that’s where we get pinched), pay out of pocket, or rely on various Catholic charities that donate quite a bit of money and time helping out these folks (maybe something you should think about while listening to the homily).
Unfortunately, they (illegals) cannot purchase private health insurance. That was one of the very few contributions to the ACA from republicans in congress. Why would they do that? You’d have to ask them.
Personally, I believe that the large landscaping companies that make quite a bit of money on the backs of these folks, should pay their health benefits. And why you’re not mad at them is beyond me. But I wanted to clear up for you the false assumption that the gov pay their health benefits. They don’t.
