Because people are obsessed with ridiculous lawns and pristine landscaping. So every leaf is violently removed and chemicals are spayed on literally everything.
The fertilizer that nearly everyone applies to their laws, runs off into the sewers, then into the lakes, rivers, and streams, and then, eventually, the ocean. Once in the ocean, the elevated levels of nitrogen and phosphorus content, can harm ocean life through a process called eutrophication. This process involves excessive nutrient runoff from land, leading to overgrowth of algae, which then depletes oxygen levels in the water when they die and decompose. And, unlike offshore wind turbines, this process actually DOES kill sea life including, by cutting off the food supply, whales.
No signs or bumper stickers about this problem though. We are a sad and misguided bunch.
It’s a matter of time that this saga will come to an end on June 27 with the approval. Great job from all the speakers making the case of the parking nightmare after all these developments are established. One suggestion for a parking garage’s without the Belmar tax payers paying the bill: why not asking a developer to build at the current municipal building/police station entire block to build a new municipal/police station at the bottom floors facing Main Street and let them build a 3 stories building on top and a parking garage facing River Ave for the owners/ public a total 500 plus spots. Give the developer an incentive for few years. Also can nj transit provide so some funds towards the parking garage since once these buildings come up many people will take the train so there is an incentive for them also? You can get a revenue for the parking garage from the public. This will be a benefit from the business on Main Street and surrounding. Again these are ideas nothing wrong from trying since I don’t see any movement towards the current and future parking nightmare. Thank you
The mayor has a problem with finding the money… the glass is half full attitude. Rather than seeking more options, he just quits on the town. When he wanted to be mayor he had so much fight.
I think this parking garage will and should be built with or without his ***** ****** attitude.
The COC has been discussing making the west side of Main Street diagonal parking. This would triple the amount of parking spots. It would also, just by the geometric set up of the diagonal parking spaces, slow down the traffic speeding across the bridge from Avon. Why hasn’t it been done? No idea. Paralysis by analysis is my guess. Leave the east side as parallel spots and change the west side to diagonal. Would cost very little and create a much better shopping experience. Plus we wouldn’t have to tear something down to make room for a giant parking deck in the middle of our little beach community.
Public parking is the job of the Belmar Parking Authority per the Borough Code … according to the proposed municipal budget, the revenue generated from pay-by-plate has been flat (abt $130K) and going down with 5 employees.
Asbury Park is able to finance a new parking garage with pay-by-plate revenue … not taxpayers.

The Mayor should seek outside the Belmar box. We don’t have new issues. We just need to seek good solutions. It’s all been done before.
