  1. The current Senior Housing facility is for seniors or those with disabilities and gives Belmar residents preferred status.
If it’s designated for Affordable Housing, applicants can be from any locations in Monmouth, Ocean or Mercer Counties which opens up the number of potential applicants to significantly more people. And Affordable Housing applicants will include families not just for seniors.
And I don’t think there is any funds in the Affordable Housing Trust Fund in Belmar.
A little disingenuous to say money from a fund can be used at the Housing Authority when there’s $0.
Keep the preference for Senior Housing for Belmar residents.

    1. BINGO – When/if they open up to “regional,” Belmar loses all sayso into who goes into the building.

  2. This is ridiculous. I cannot believe he wants to do this to the Belmar residents and Belmar taxpayers. This would not take care of the Belmar seniors and residents who have lived here forever, it would be a lottery and pick people from all over the state who would be put up in there. Meanwhile what happens to the long time Belmar residents as they start to age after paying taxes to Belmar all these years- I guess they go into a lottery and are forced out. This is a terrible terrible suggestions

  3. I’m not quite sure what the deal is, the BHA building is already part of the state’s affordable housing program. Technically all of those units are already “affordable”. Could it be that the mayor is trying to get some of those units counted towards our current obligation? Can someone explain?

    1. Well, after reading the article, it appears that yes, the mayor wants to have the units in the building count towards Belmar’s affordable housing requirements. Sounds like a solid plan to me. They are already there, they are already affordable. Why not make them count.
This is a classic case of partisan blinders. If Walsifer had this exact same proposal, the right would be touting how great an idea it was. And the left would be criticizing it. Since it’s Buccafusco, the opposite is true.

      1. Walsifer would never consider doing that to the Belmar Seniors even he knows how important that is for the Belmar citizens. Buccafusco just doesn’t care because he started this by filing a suit that could have waited now he is scrambling
He needs to think things through better

  4. BHA building is a federal building under jurisdiction of US Housing and Urban Development. The building is designated for seniors and persons with disabilities.
The mayor wants to use the building to fulfill Belmar compliance for affordable housing units. To open applications to residents from Mercer, Ocean, and Monmouth County’s will set the stage for government take over. Will the building be open to all ages? Who will enforce
no smoking/no marijuana/no drugs/no prostitution? How many people can live in a one bedroom apartment? Who will enforce apartment capacity? Are there any boarding houses the boro can change to affordable housing units?

    1. Seems like a lot of hand wringing over a lot of unanswered questions.
I’m not sure if you realize that the US HUD IS the government. I can’t figure out why you’d be worried about a ‘government takeover’ for a building that is already run by the government.
It’s easy to tell. If it was a private building, the rent would be outrageous, the current residents would be out on the street, and the new well healed residents would use connections to shut down 10th Ave Burrito, Anchor, Jacks, and Klein’s.

      1. I know BHA is run by HUD which is the federal government.
Yes, a lot of hand wringing over unanswered questions.
If you lived here, you would be concerned, too.

        1. I guess I should’ve said, a lot of hand wringing over supposition. I’ve lived here for over 30 years. I’m concerned about a lot of things in town. This one sits somewhere below the top 10. If the affordable housing obligation doesn’t come from the senior building, then it has to come from somewhere else. The building itself has been neglected by the local authority. It’s been the source of complaints for over 30 years. Now, all the sudden, it’s the beacon of self governance? I understand the importance of keeping it as is, but that means accepting the alternative solution. Which for some, is just as difficult to swallow.
Perhaps if Doherty and Walsifer didn’t play kick the can, we wouldn’t be having this discussion.
