As we honor those who gave their lives defending this great country (in my family it’s two great uncles and my mother’s older brother) it is also a time to REJECT those who engage in false bravado. Politicians who casually put lives at risk while they, using their wealth and social status to dodge military service, avoid having to sacrifice anything.
In calling out such behavior, and being honest about the marketing of false patriotism by those who stand to gain financially from conflict, we truly honor those who have perished.
Don’t freak out, just give it some thought.
You did it!
“Memorial” has found a way to put a political spin on the one day, we as Americans should only reflect on the ultimate sacrifice our brave soldiers have given. You should be embarrassed.
I’ve always held this day in the highest respect. Not only because I knew some men who were killed, but because my views on war have changed so radically over the years (I’m far from a pacifist). When I observe Memorial Day now, I take into account our adversaries who were presumably doing for their country, what we were doing for ours. They were true patriots as well.
Of course, on that hallowed day, I do observe our men’s sacrifice.
