They do not have a handle on tourism. Tourism used to make money for the town. They used to make money at the seafood fest and it was local vendors.
Sadly the last Mayor and the interim Mayor try to reinvent the wheel without success. There are plenty of people in town who have expertise on tourism and on every other entity in this town. Remember this town has been around for over 100 years.
Why not call upon the people that know best.

They need to hire a qualified person for Tourism. The one they have now is completely useless….well maybe it’s because she is never here when I come into the boro office or call to speak with her. And you also must be mad at DeBlasio, who sat and did nothing about for 8 months (zero tolerance is zero tolerance) But you’re likely 80% less mad at him than you are with Donovan. But about 90% less mad with him than you are with Kinney.

This comment makes no sense. Donovan cleaned up the lake. DeBlasio and Anan had nothing to do with it- how could they? They have no jurisdiction there. She’s even talked about it on Facebook.

This was a political stunt which ultimately hurt the residence of Belmar.
DPW always maintained the lake prior to the last four years when they were told not to touch the lake.
Not all events that happen in town are “Belmar” events, that’s what they mean. Seafood and the sand castle contest seem to be the only “Belmar” events. The parade has always been a Friendly Sons event, races are usually Jersey Shore Running Club events, Chamber has their events, and so on. We had a tourism director who worked at boro hall, as her JOB, and she retired a few years ago. During the Doherty admin I think we used Spark Marketing in Red Bank. We had brochures with dining and shopping and all the stuff going on in town. That’s what’s missing. Having a tourism commission filled with business owners is great, but they need a single person to wrangle their concerns and make a plan going forward.
That being said, with all of the housing coming in, do we really need to bring more people here for events? Where are they going to park?? If we’re talking about events for locals, fine. But bringing more people here otherwise will be a logistical challenge in the future.
I didn’t say we don’t need parking, but at this point all the squares are gone. The time for a parking deck was five years ago, maybe more, but Belmar is good at kicking cans down the road until it’s too late. So what is the point of bringing in more tourism if there’s no where for anyone to park. Council President Kinney even said there’s not enough parking for the residents of all these new buildings. And you want to bring tourists in on top of that?
Remember the summer of 2015 when the seafood festival brought so many people to town they had to shut access down? Well those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
Tourism and town related business has not been the same since Walsifer became Mayor. The BPP used to be so much more involved as was the tourism commission and now they are pretty much obselete.

All you need is to pick up the phone. You do not need to be an elected official to get things done. You just have to care.

Thank you previous Mayor and BA for the declarative judgment to move the deal of the route 35 building to the state.
That state should be helping us now with our parking problem that they created.
Unfortunately, when things go outside of this town they are no longer negotiable.
