I am completely disgusted by the enormity of the structure on Hwy 35. I look out my window every day and it gets bigger and uglier. Our tiny one square mile town is lost. I’ll be voting for change.
Agreed Sir. But I’ll mention another aspect of disgust. The workforce is almost entirely “migrants” of one sort or another. This is because we’ve taught our male children that working with their hands was/is beneath their dignity (not in those exact words of course). Well, here we are with thousands of our young men with college “diplomas” that aren’t worth anything and their so-called jobs will be wiped out by AI in the not too distant future.
It is almost comical how many times this needs to be explained to people. Almost.
The Rt 35 project, conceived of years before Buccafusco, was slammed down our throats because the two previous mayors (one dem one repub) kicked the affordable housing can down the road. This is all public information that is easily researched. We had no choice once the developer got the courts involved. IF we had fulfilled our affordable housing requirements during the previous administrations (there were plenty of opportunities. Doherty ignored them to push PILOT programs to keep taxes artificially low, Walsifer ignored them due to party loyalty), we wouldn’t be in this mess. There would still be a condo complex on that site, just not as ridiculous.
The “change” you seek will not be found in DeBlasio. Heck, it won’t even be found in Donovan. You wanna be mad at Buccafusco, there are plenty of things to be mad about. But that Rt 35 monstrosity is not one of them.
That monstrosity can be laid squarely at the feet of Walsifer and Doherty.
Jim Diorios letter is about as succinct and accurate as one can get. Please read it. If you have a problem with it, refute what he says using facts. Mr DeBlasio is a good guy and a thoughtful politician. But he has too many potential conflicts. He is doing the right thing by recusing himself, but do we want to have a mayor that needs to recuse himself (as he should) from that much town business?
Here is my problem with Di Orio’s letter. I do not think that someone building a single family home in Belmar should be burdened with paying into the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. According to NJ Housing Authority, “the money set forth in an affordable housing trust is restricted to housing-related activities that benefit low-, very low-, or extremely low-income households (typically targeting those at or below 80% of the Area Median Income).” It is set up to provide grants and aid that qualify for affordable housing or assist the boro to purchase properties that further the affordable housing requirements. Aren’t we trying to slow this down??? Seems like pure socialism at its finest to me. The affordable housing fee in town for someone trying to build a single family home with construction costs at $500K would be over $7,500. And that money would go to provide grants to those that can’t afford housing in town. This fee should lie solely on the backs of developers rather than single families. Maybe if it is high enough developers would be less inclined to build monstrosities?
So DeBlasio is 5th generation because he married into a family that is 5th generation. If I married a Kennedy then I can claim 10th generation living in Hyannisport?

To add to that, if Walsifer had won mayor a second term this project would have been bigger with no affordable housing.
Same with me. In Jerry’s last meeting when he resigned, he bragged about accomplishing this goal to overbuild Belmar.
He is someone who came from Jersey City and I guess doesn’t understand the infrastructure and love for our small town of Belmar.
Remember, Caitlin is his legacy.
He resigned to give her the position as Mayor and to follow his dream.
Don’t be fooled.
Do not vote for this party.
We’ll never get to see a sunrise or sunset in this town again.
