I think the mayor’s party offers up three names for replacement. The council then votes on one of the three. The council is majority Republican (has been for six months folks seem to forget) so they will be the ones to select one of the three names. If they accept, the chosen person will fill in as mayor until the end of this term. I assume Mr DeBlasio would like it to be himself and that Mrs Donovan would like it to be herself. Gives either one of them a leg up in Nov.
When Matt Doherty (now a supporter of DeBlasio, yuk) quit being mayor (thank goodness) for a plum crony job in AC, the dems supplied three names, the winner was McGovern. And McGovern served (continued to serve) as Matt’s puppet until trounced by Walsifer in the next election.
It doesn’t. It probably WILL be a dem but the three names proposed by the dem committee can be anyone. They could recommend Mrs Kinney as one of the names if they wanted to, or if they thought it would be a good strategy for Nov.
