Anyone who has lived here for a while knows that insects have always been a fact of life at the shore. In the 60s the “Bug Trucks” drove around and fogged us all with DDT and god knows what else. I don’t think anyone wants to go back to that. There is a long term plan in the works for Silver Lake but that is not going to get rid of the bugs, although it will help bring the system back into balance.
The surroundings of our Silver Lake is disgusting. Go look at Lake Como and Spring Lake. You can walk to water’s edge, go fishing, sit on a bench and look at the swans. Silver Lake is overgrown, bug and rodent infested.
The Lake Como and Spring Lake sections of Lake Como are very nice where you can walk to the waters edge. The Belmar section of Lake Como is overgrown. It’s embarrassing.
The bugs at the lake are called midge. They are similar to a mosquito but they do not bite. There larva develops in the mud at the bottom of ponds or lakes. So a simple solution would be to get a healthy supply of fish in the lake such as blue gill. You could add aeration to the bottom of the lake but that gets pricey. Just get native fish donated by the state. Boom done
What about the view of the residents?
Lake Como doesn’t have geese and their grasses are nice and short. You should also know that the grasses are not native. Check it out for yourself. They will be removed because they are an invasive species not from NJ.

How about you all join the environmental commission or show up at a council meeting and voice these concerns? The same handful of people speak during public session, I’m guessing none of you are one of them. How about being part of the solution instead of banging on about it? While this is brilliant, why isn’t this getting done? I understand there’s a plan, but it’s been a plan for almost 4 years now.
I took a drive around Lake Como all around the springlake side, the Lake Como side and then the Belmar portion.
The only portion of the lake that is overgrown and looks exactly like Silver Lake is the BELMAR portion.
Everything else is manicured gorgeously a real gem for those residence and those who visit.
